Evening Mail mayoral petition going backwards...
Those who are still following the Birmingham Evening Mail's elected mayor campaign (yes, there aren't many of you left...) may well have missed a small revelation in an article on 6 July.
Apparently there have been only 5000 signatures to their petition to date. (The Mail's whinge relates to the fact that they aren't allowed access to the electoral register to check the names, of course they could purchase it or go to their local library to inspect, but the law is quite clear on who can have access to the full version).
But 3 months ago the editor claimed, in an email, that there were 6000 signatures to their petition. So not only has the collection rate decreased, but its going backwards! Maybe by the time its being going for 12 months they'll be back to zero.
You can also tell by the number of articles appearing in the Mail that interest is peetering out. Maybe they'll just have blank articles in a few months time?

Another photo from the tour de france prologue in London
I managed to take about 300 photos while watching the prologue on Saturday (thats just the ones I didn't delete straight away when I missed the rider and just got tarmac...)
I'll be uploading a few more to flickr over the next couple of days. But this is one of my favourites from the collection.
When the riders came down the nearside barrier it was sometimes impossible to see them until they were right on top of us. But with this shot I managed to lean out and get the shot without hindrance.
Tour de France
On Saturday I had the chance to see the Prologue stage of the Tour de France in London.
I'd decided to take up a point on the Mall, and had hoped to be right outside Buckingham palace and at the junction with Constitution Hill. But it was busy there even 3 hours before the first rider. So i went back to the Mall where Green Park comes out on to it, this was about 380m from the finish line.
I'd also decided to take my Canon 5D and a couple of lenses (24-105 f4 and the bigger 70-200 f2.8). In retrospect I'd have taken the 1Dmk2 as well, but had decided to travel lite! The 5D can only do 3 fps, while the 1Dmk2 can do 8fps.
The photo here is of Fabien Cancellara, the eventual prologue winner.

Tories "campaign" in Ealing
The Tory campaign was spotted on Wednesday while out on the streets of Ealing and Southall. But it must go down as one of the most environmentally unfriendly ones: driving up and down the streets in cars with speakers on.
What would "cycling" Davey Cameron say to that?
The most bizarre thing is that they're doing it over 2 weeks before polling day. Have they nothing better to be doing?
Meanwhile the LibDem campaign in Ealing Southall goes from strength to strength. Nigel Bakhai was out on the streets with Charles Kennedy MP meeting and talking to real people in rain and sunshine.
Everytime I'm in the HQ I see one of our MPs popping in to collect more leaflets to deliver, or helping out with some of the clerical tasks.

Saturday in Ealing Southall by-election
Yesterday, Colin Ross and I were out campaigning in Ealing Southall with Ming Campbell's chief of staff Ed Davey MP.
It was a good day's campaigning with a constant flow of leaflets leaving the HQ and heading for letterboxes.
